Saturday night (May 1st) at Redline Raceway, Tim Reidy continued his winning run taking his second straight AMCA Nationals feature win in a row, after breaking through for his first feature win only a fortnight earlier at Wangaratta City Raceway.
After a poor start to the year with engine problems and some driveline failures it has all come together for the third generation racer who has now finished his season on an extremely high note.
Apart from Reidy’s great win, the night will sadly be remembered for the violent roll-over of veteran Alan Cullinger with one lap remaining which saw the race red flagged and declared.
The first heat of the night saw a great line up of cars including Mick Kiraly, Stewart Grant-Campbell, Reidy, Paul Sullivan and Alan Howe. Following a great battle over the 10 lap distance Sullivan won closely from Grant-Campbell and Reidy continuing his form from the last meeting here.
Heat 1b was another great heat which saw Frank Thiery take the win from the front row from Steve Broadbent home in second and officially home in third was Rob Taylor. Stan Marco Jnr had made a last corner pass on Taylor only to be relegated back to fourth after the chief steward deemed that Marco had used Taylor as a cushion to get around the corner. The only driver not to finish was Hans Lovski after being directed to the infield for causing 3 stoppages.
In the final heat of the first round Daniel Scott started his night off with a heat win from Mick Jackson in second and Darren Clarke home in a lucky third after earlier having a coming together with Alan Cullinger. Both cars had come together while avoiding a spinning Brenton Farrer and had become stuck. After some great work by the Redline Fire Crew the cars were separated and both were able to continue racing.
The second round of heats finally came around for the drivers with heat 2a being taken out by Kiraly with Reidy home in second and Grant-Campbell home in third. Rookie Jamie Collins, who had missed his first heat due to steering problems found before the meeting, did not finish and was out for the remainder of the night.
Heat 2b saw Broadbent, a feature winner here last season, take the high line from the start and go around the field to take the win from Thiery who had come from the back row to grab second while third was Grant Cullinger in the original AMCA #55.
The last heat of the second round was taken out by Dave May, who had sorted out some power steering issues found after the first heat due to the roll over from Easter, closely followed by Scott and Farrer.
Next up was the all important final round of heats that saw the highest points to the rear with the heats being taken out by Reidy, Grant-Campbell and Kiraly.
After a short break it was time for the seasons last all important final. Starting from pole was Grant-Campbell with Reidy on the outside and Kiraly in 3 and Thiery out of 4.
At the start the battle was on into the first corner with Reidy taking the lead and not looking back for the rest of the race. Back in the pack a bump into the front of Alan Howe's wheels saw him given the mechanical defect flag then the black flag as he wouldn’t pull infield. Eventually the race went to yellow and Howe was told to go into the infield. At the same time contact was made in the back straight between Grant-Campbell and Alan Cullinger with the result seeing Grant-Campbell pulling into the middle with bent steering.
At the restart the field took off with Reidy in the lead from Scott and Kiraly in third and this how it was as they came around to get the white flag. As the cars came out of turn four contact between Scott and Alan Cullinger, who was being lapped, saw Cullinger head into the wall and roll, and roll, and roll some more. With the reds coming on the race was declared with Reidy the clear winner from Kiraly and Dave May being elevated to third with the exclusion of Scott who actually crossed the line in third. Behind them came Sullivan, Thiery, Broadbent, Darren Clarke, Farrer, Marco, Bruce Tait, Bill Lodwick Jnr, Taylor, Jacquie Clarke and Cullinger.
Alan Cullinger was taken to hospital with a hand injury but was later released and would like to thank All Star Paul Solomon for driving his transporter home for him.
Alan would also like to thank everyone for their concern, assistance and best wishes.
The Smiley’s drive of the night went to Paul Sullivan.
