Third generation Speedway racer Tim Reidy has promised so much for a while now and last Saturday (April 17th) at Wangaratta City Raceway he delivered on that promise with a break through AMCA Nationals feature win.
It was a real regional affair with Bendigo’s Darren Clarke grabbing the runner up spot from Geelongs Frank Thierry.
With a host of drivers missing due to last start winner Mark Lincolns’ wedding commitments, a depleted 14 car field was ready to take to the sandy track and to try and enter their respective names into the winners list for the 2009/10 season. Heat 1 saw Clarke back to his best with a fine win from pole followed by Reidy and up and coming driver Jamie Collins in third. Trevor Thierrys’ night finished early with a blown engine. Bill Lodwick failed to finish with a blown gearbox and Steve Broadbent failed to start with electrical problems.
Heat 2 saw Reidy take an easy win over Alan Howe with a repaired Lodwick home in third, with an impressive drive from rookie Steve Ryan in the Paul Sullivan car.
Reidy doubled his win tally in heat 3 and showed that he was the driver to beat defeating Frank Thierry and Bruce Tait. Darran O'Rielly finished the heat with smoke belching out of the car only to later find his night and season over with engine issues.
The fourth and final heat saw a different winner with Paul Forrest making the most of his pole start under pressure from Collins who came home in second ahead of Steve Broadbent.
With two heat wins, Reidy sat on pole for the main event with rookie driver Collins on his outside and Clarke and Frank Thierry right behind the young chargers.
On the first start Reidy took off a little too quick with the yellows coming on and the field being sent around for a second try. The next start was better and Reidy took off with Clarke hot on his heels as they set about moving away from the rest of the field. Back in the pack the race was on for the minors with some great action dished out by the drivers. The yellows came out mid distance with Ryan and Rob Taylor making contact down the back straight with the result being that both cars were not able to restart. This brought the field back together and it set up a chance for the vastly experienced Clarke to possibly jump Reidy. However, the young gun made a good start and immediately opened a gap between himself and the rest of the field only to have the yellows come on again after Stan Marco made contact with the wall and broke the front suspension. At the restart Reidy once again got the jump on the field and pulled away before flirting with disaster and almost ending his own race when he hit back straight wall and bounced off. Having dodged that bullet Reidy was amazingly able to continue. With only a handful of laps left and in a great dice for the minor placings, Collins made contact with Forrest which saw Forrest retire and Collins being sent to the rear of the field. This set up a dash to the flag with Reidy finally taking his maiden feature win from Clark and Frank Thierry followed by Howe, Broadbent, Lodwick, Tait and Collins.
Reidy celebrated with a couple of donuts and a quick call to category owner and father, Mick, who was officiating at the Queensland Championship in Brisbane.
Next event for the Victorian aces is this weekend (24th) at Sonic Speedway Swan Hill followed on May 2nd with the season ending event at Redline Raceway Ballarat.
