Saturday 20th February saw the prestigious Barry Reidy Memorial for AMCA Nationals concluded at Nyora Speedbowl and it was the first leg Avalon victor Mick Kiraly who took the win, and along with it, the overall victory, after a dominant display in the 20 lap feature event.
Kiraly took the lead right from the moment the green flag dropped with Tim Reidy, the Grandson of the late Barry Reidy, impressive in second, ahead Paul Forrest and new South Australian Champion Daniel Scott who came from deep in the pack to finish behind the podium trio.
In the first round of heats the drivers were greeted by a very wet track which was going to make the racing very interesting for the front row starters of the race - favourites Kiraly and Scott. It was a case of whoever was going to get to the first corner in front would win and that’s what happened as Kiraly went on to win from Scott and Adam Timberlake.
The second heat was taken out after an impressive drive by Forrest with Paul Sullivan coming from position 8 to grab 2nd with Peter Hickford 3rd.
In the final heat of the first round saw Brenten Farrer who took the win on debut in a new car from Dave May and Rob Taylor who rolled his car the last time out at this venue.
The second round of heats was a reverse grid set which saw Kiraly and Scott having to come from the rear, but taking the win was Alan Howe with Kiraly 2nd and Timberlake 3rd.
Reidy made the most of his outside starting position in the next heat from Sullivan with “Mr Consistant” Bruce Tait coming home 3rd. The only incident from the race was Rod Duncan spinning and then getting hit bending the rear end.
The final reverse grid heat was taken out by May from Stan Marco, who was having his first hit out for the season, while in third was Grant Cullinger.
The third round of heats saw Farrer notch up his second win of the night from Cullinger and Kevin Peachey.
Reidy also added another win to his nights’ spoils with Frank Thiery coming home next from Tait in third.
In the last heat of the night Darren Clarke took the win from Hickford and Kiraly who had come from the back once again.
Due to the track curfew drawing near the b-main was dropped from the program, which saw the top 18 cars take to the track for the all important 20 lap final.
Starting off the front row was Kiraly who was never really challenged for the lead and eventually took the win. Reidy, who came out of position 2, also finished in the same position much to the delight of his dad and crew. Later he commented it was great to finish on the podium of a race dedicated to his grandfather. In third place was the surprise of the night Forrest who has had a string of bad luck over the last couple of meetings and who couldn’t thank everyone enough for all their help.
Just off the podium was Scott from, Tait, Clarke, Sullivan, Shea Bradley, Howe, Peachey, Hans Lovski and Jamie Collins.
May (tyre), Farrer (front end damage), Thiery (engine), Marco (suspension) and Taylor (tyre) all failed to finish.
The Smiley's drive of the night went to Tim Reidy(v79).
